”Cohen’s method is original and precise and harkens back to the methodologies employed by early 19th century photographers like Gustave Le Grey. He photographs the world’s major cities, seeking out views that resonate for him and noting the precise time, angle, and latitude and longitude of his exposure. As the world rotates around its axis the stars that would have been visible above a particular city move to deserts, plains, and other places free of light pollution. By noting the precise latitude and angle of his cityscape, Cohen is able to track the earth’s rotation to places of atmospheric clarity like the Mojave, the Sahara, and the Atacama desert. There he sets up his camera to record what is lost to modern urban dwellers.” - Danziger Gallery

Twin Cats Always Mirror Each Other in Sleep

Scientists are baffled by twin cats, Merry and Pippin, who reportedly always sleep in an exact mirror image of one another.

“Even if we place them in disparate starting positions or in separate rooms, they somehow always wind up sleeping exactly like the other,” said leading cat biologist and feline sleep expert Dr. Tobias Winslow. ”I’ve never seen anything like it.”

A polysomnogram revealed nothing out of the ordinary about the cats’ brain functions, eye movements, muscle activity, breathing or heart rhythms. ”We had expected to find that Merry and Pip were synched up on an internal level,” explained Winslow, “but it is literally just in the way they position their bodies for slumber.”

More tests will be done later this month during a scheduled comprehensive sleep study.

But there’s also studies that have shown even though literacy is improving, reading rates of paper books is less. That probably isn’t surprising. There’s now many ways to take in information. Depending on what the content is, I would still usually rather watch a video tutorial, or read blogs, articles online, or listen to audio books. Maybe I’m just old school but it’s always been a treat to pick up a book and be able to flip through the pages, and see your bookmark move slowly through the book, tracing your progress. As much as I enjoyed travelling around the States, to all the different cities and I believe books similarly open up new places for cheaper. But as well as different places, a book can take you to different times, different lives and their reality is as colourful, detailed, and elaborate as your imagination allows. As much as I want to travel to see the world, I have also resolved to travel to the great worlds in literature.

Going to the local library and choosing a fiction book is something I haven’t done in so long that I cannot remember when the last time was. If I do read, I generally prefer to read non-fiction as I have always had the impression that they held more value. If I’m going to read, I might as well learn something from it that’s real. But there’s also value in an open mind.

One night, walking to the bus stop on my way home, I went in to Auckland library, which has a section dedicated to the classics. I picked out Robinson Crusoe, something I’ve always been meaning to read and never got round to. I have also seen two or three episodes of the tv series, and thought it sounded like quite an interesting story. If you have not heard of Robinson Crusoe, and at this point after talking to quite a number of people none of whom have heard of it, I am beyond surprise now.

Essentially a man, stranded on an island by himself using some supplies from his shipwrecked boat, has to try to survive. There’s also some parts which reflects on him re-finding his Christian faith. To spice the narrative up he also encounters cannibals. By reading in every moment of my spare time, I got through it in a week. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I would recommend it if you’ve ever wondered about what life on an island by yourself would be like.

There’s something satisfying about making time, repeatedly, consistently for an activity. My favourite part of reading books is that if you tough it out, you will always finish it, just like television series I guess. So I’ve resolved to read the Penguin Classics- all of them if it’s feasible. However, that is something we will have to see, since there’s at least 1300 and at the rate of one book a week, that’s still over 20 years. I guess I will be a well-read 40 year old at that point. But one week a book is pushing it considering I have also decided to vary what I read by reading through different non-fiction fields. Currently I’m going through 50 mathematical ideas you really need to know.

Tonight my bedtime reading will be about the 15th mathematical idea, Euclid’s algorithm. Guess Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy are going to have to wait a little while longer.

The Block open home (Taken with Instagram)

The Block open home (Taken with Instagram)

It’s been two months since I left the states. I think the easiest way I’ve found to deal with things is out of sight, out of mind. It works for the most part, except when almost anything reminds me of last year. So that plan can only work so well. Everyday I can’t help but think of places, events, or people. Willingly or unwillingly they’re like fragments and flashes, that are vivid and yet fade just as fast. No I won’t ever forget, but the trouble might be if I want to go back. Luckily I’ve found a quick fix in the form of playing Driver San Francisco.

I think I’m treading on dangerous ground. Even though most days I’m here fully in the present there are times when I slip into the past, whether or not I want to. But while I am still in the shadow of the past I cannot fully engage in the present. Today is the time of incredible opportunity. And if I live in these moments now , I might have something later on to look back to, or things to look forward to. So like they used to say carpe diem, or like what the young kids these days say yolo. Or my favourite: This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. -Psalm 118:24
