Day 2: Relationship(s)

Relationships, can’t ever get away from them. To see what I mean try giving this game a go: http://www.etc.cmu.edu/projects/mindful-xp/games/connections/. It’s something I played earlier this year, where you progress through life and you try to maintain the connections with people you ‘meet’.

My first attempt was my most successful, where I didn’t know I could go outside the bounds of my screen, and maintained a few relationships to the end. Games after were more difficult as I ventured further to make connections and had a difficult time maintaining them all. After my first game, the rest of them ended with me still middle-aged but having no more life to give back.

Being forgetful, maybe absent minded, always misplacing things, not remembering to bring things or double booking, this list won’t be too long anyway. Reflecting is something that I don’t do enough of, but looking back without the aid of my calendar a few of the most memorable ones come to the front.

"I want to be an architect." “In thirty years, if there is a newspaper article about you, what will it say?” “It will say that I underachieved.” “Underachieved? Why’s that?” “Because I can do all the work, make the right grades, and get all the right degrees. But once I’m off on my own, I won’t be the guy pushing for new clients. I do really good work, but only when I’m working within a structure.” “Everyone is like that. You just have to practice discipline and routine so that you can create your own structure.”

You can only go so far on a paved path before you have to get off and make your own. You need to know where your true north is.
